I think my first generation, pre-ordered G4/400 is giving up the ghost. It's currently my desktop machine and I was hoping to keep it on as a file server (I've finally gotten the money together for a new computer) but I'm getting heaps of I/O errors on the networking port.

I mean, it is a 9 year old computer, so I really don't have any complaints, but it wouldn't suck to have a dedicated MacOS based fileserver/backup server.

Actually, I mis-spoke. I was actually just seeing lots of packets dropping (LAN and WAN). I need to check the logs to do a more detailed analysis.

Any ideas on where to look for specific errors?

Is it one of the models with slots? If so, try getting a cheap network card for it.

It is...and I have a few lying around. Its merely a question of whether any of them are MacOS compatible...

Yeah, I think that's my next step. First I'll try to see if any of the ones I have lying around are MacOS compatible and if not, I'll look into getting a cheapy. I'm just trying not to dump any more money into it than I have to...as opposed to putting that money into something new.
