Won't you be my neighbor? [Nov. 9th, 2009|04:09 pm]

[gublerette]

(mods if this is not allowed, please delete and I apologize)

Hi there!  I'm back on LJ after a long hiatus and losing my interest to post on my old journal.  I intend to change all that with this new journal.  So far I only have two tiny entries but I hope to expand that, as the holiday season falls upon us and as my creativity progresses.

I'm looking for friends who'd be interested in the same things I am and would leave a comment every now and then when they feel so inclined. I like reading about all sorts of things - even if you think your life is boring, I'll probably still find something to say about it!

I am:

...from Pennsylvania
...26-years old
...a single (bisexual, though I prefer men) female (not really looking though)
...a huge fan of Matthew Gray Gubler and Criminal Minds
...a fan of Dexter, House M.D., Six Feet Under and CSI (Vegas, not Miami or NY so much)
...a starving artist always seeking inspiration, a muse, anything!
...the proud owner of two cute cats and a stupid dog
...interested in people and things of all sorts, especially unique and/or creative/artsy-fartsy types
...sarcastic, dry, "dark"
...almost always at home due to chronic knee problems and seizures
...interested in getting into the "world" of LJ - i.e. I'd love to start making icons, picspams, etc.
...terrified of clowns
...made of skin and bones so I hate cold weather

And of course there's more info on my profile page! If you have some things in common or just want to add me then feel free (with the exception of friends collectors please.  I don't want to be just a number)  and I'll most likely add you back.

Thanks for reading and I hope to get acquainted with some of you!

5 Things Update, Some are Spheres, and Some are Spots Edition [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:32 pm]

[mood | busy]
[music |Talking Heads--Drugs (live)]

1) Busy weekend: Friday train to boston, bus to Concord NH. Saturday drove to Exeter, picked up Penske truck, drove to Newmarket, unloaded nearly all the contents of my folks' giant storage locker, loaded 50% into penske truck (making it 100% full), and reloaded the rest into the storage locker--me being the only one who could lift much at all, K still being in NJ and my sister being willing to carry the other end of furniture but not boxes of books and suchlike 1-person jobs. Sunday drove from NH to NJ, unloaded the whole truck, and returned it to Penske

2) Scored some great stuff, to wit: a sleeper loveseat, an armchair, a desk, an armoire, a dresser, 3 oriental rugs of varying sizes from small to ridiculous; a set of shelves; a floor lamp; a sidetable; an enormous pub sign showing a White Hart chained; with a crown for a collar; and a coffin.

3) My sister and parents are now at my house, painting as far as I know. Cool! Also, nervous making. They're going to do a ton of work on the place, but it makes me crazy not to be there to approve or deny ideas. Leap of faith!

4) Thinking about starting a gaming blog. Got a lot of edits, playtests, and, potentially, actual games to talk about. Might be a thing. I'm guessing wordpress. In related gaming news, might be joining white wolf and shadowrun games I found on meetup.org. I own piles of whitewolf stuff, ordered a cheapish copy of Shadowrun on Friday. Woot!

5)Got a big project to finish up by Weds for Colonial Gothic, which could be tough with my folks here, and because I have to help K with her evaluations for her flunkies, due by Thursday. And I already have the next Colonial Gothic project to edit, and it's bigger--an actual book this time--the kind that comes out on paper and everything!

Luke the Idiot Boy Mayor is at it again. [Nov. 9th, 2009|12:03 pm]

Oh, for the love of Mike.

The Idiot Boy mayor has asked city council to tax college students for the privilege of going to school in Pittsburgh.

While Pitt and UPMC remain tax exempt.

Does anybody else see anything wrong with this picture? Let's tax poor college students (many of whom are city residents or employees of city businesses, and thus *already* taxed for their use of city services) while the wealthiest corporations in our city continue to cry "non-profit!" and pay nothing.

Oy vey ...

[money] more on bread [Nov. 9th, 2009|08:57 am]

opadit
Speak of the devil, today at the SuperFresh at 5th and Pine I found 5-pound sacks of Pillsbury brand unbleached white flour on $ale: 2 sacks for 3 bucks. That will bring down the cost of a loaf of home-made bread to about 75 or even 50 cents.

Go. Light a candle. Solemnly proceed
Along the aisle. Sweet prometheus
Stole just a bauble. Later came the seed,
And liberation. Ride the abacus

Down Chestnut Street to Main and come to State,
And plant yourself behind the oaken bar.
Employment is an article of faith
In images. We haven't starved so far.

That might be just an aberration. Taste
The fruits that others gather while ye may.
Debug. Refactor. Analyze and trace
And watch the portrait. Witness Seymour Cray

Grown old in spite of Dijkstra, Knuth and Moore.
There's room for doubt. Enjoy your perfect pour.

Some notes from the last day of the NWTRCC National Gathering in Cleveland, Ohio. Also: Aristotle tries to figure out what happens when self-control fails. Do facts get lost when universal premises collide and the promise of sensual pleasure takes advantage of the confusion?

they are SO morally bankrupt (and out to lunch in general) but never so much as in the health care debate.

I've been told that "health care is not a political issue" and that "it doesn't matter what happens because *I* have health insurance from my job." fuck that too.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some sort of public option. if it doesn't happen, I'll still be out in the cold like I always have been, since I don't have a corporate job to provide benefits for me.

[money] on bread [Nov. 8th, 2009|05:00 pm]

opadit
Used to be I could get my favorite bread at both of the SuperFresh supermarkets by my home. What I liked to get best was Stroehmann's "Soft Family" 100% whole-wheat bread. Same price and weight as the other 100% whole-wheat loaves -- but more slices, because it's the family size, so it lasted longer. Well, Stroehmann is still making it (I spotted it at a convenience store at the Piazza at Schmidts a couple of weekends ago), but my SuperFreshes have quit carrying it. Coincidentally, both stores have renovated and upscaled their look and their wares in the past year.

So I've quit buying bread at the store and I seem to be making it at home all the time now.

One 5-pound sack of unbleached white flour costs about the same as a cheap loaf of sandwich bread, but makes about four loaves. I haven't seen an appreciable rise in my gas bill, and I guess I'm still amortizing the cost of the dutch oven. That said, we go through one loaf of this bread probably twice as quickly as we'd go through one loaf of store-boughten bread. I think this is because store bread is good only for sandwiches and toast, but the home-made bread is a good starch for using with soup and other meals. Putting it all together, I'd guess that a loaf of my bread costs about a dollar. It's comparable in quality and size to an "artisan" sourdough boule from the Whole Foods down the street, which would sell for more than a dollar. Yay!

I rocked up some RockBand last night at my brother's house. :) That was a lot of fun. During the visit, I discussed a lot of geeky wonderfulness and it reminded me yet again that I need to organize some events and get people together to be the fantastic geeks that we are.

Specifically, I'd love to get a one-shot LARP kinda thing going. Which would give me a chance to try and organize a game and test out running it. :)

If that goes well, I'd love to make a vampire game in Winnipeg... heavily modeled after Calgary's larp.. :) Which I most certainly miss dearly. Thanks Marie-Claire and Kyle. It's what I miss most about Calgary.

I can't wait to get that and my Call of Cthulhu tabletop rpg going.

Glenn, the Good Witch of Pittsburgh [Nov. 8th, 2009|07:02 pm]
iheartpgh
This entry is part of the series Moving Back to the Burgh

Yes, we are still on the Yellowbrick Road to The Emerald Steel City.

The past few weeks have been a reminder to me that our journey back to Pittsburgh really is mirroring The Wizard of Oz.  Just like Dorothy, I feel like I have been in a cyclone and dropped into a new and semi-strange land.  I haven’t posted in so long because my free time has been spent getting reacquainted with my home state and the education system there.  Since I left in 1993,  so many things have changed it makes my head spin just to think about it.

First, there are two more criminal clearances than when I first earned my certificate to teach in PA.  Don’t get me wrong, I certainly do not mind submitting to them and want school children to be safe from predators.   I applied and paid for the first one online.  Simple and convenient.  I’m all clear and safe to teach.  Yeah! I can check that one off the list.  However, the second one required a list of all of my addresses and all of the people with whom I have lived since 1975.   Yes, since 1975!  In 1975, I was . . .  well never mind how old I was but it was very, very young.  Also, do the boyfriends of my college roommates count because a couple of them NEVER seemed to go home?    Needless to say it took forFREAKINGever to make sure that document was accurate.  I even had to use Google Earth to check on a few addresses.  Then, this one had to be snail mailed and paid for with a money order – Do money orders still exist??  Apparently, so – who knew?  I guess I’ve gotten too complacent with my newfangled, fancy-pants check writing and credit card using.

The last one, an FBI background check must be done in PA.  Again, I’m completely willing to submit to this and any other check they want to do.   But it makes me very anxious to wait until we travel to PA for the holidays.  My ducks or flying monkeys, or whatever are not getting in a row quickly enough.  This definitely does not remind me of a  dancing welcome from the Lullaby League or the Lollipop Guild.

Then there is the matter of my teaching certificate. I started out with a certificate to teach Social Studies in Grades 7-12.  Through my fourteen years teaching  in NC, I have had the opportunity to add more areas of certification and, of course, would like the flexibility to apply for jobs in any of them.  Easier said than done.  The good news- I still have a certificate in PA; and the bad news- I have to get it out of hock from the bureaucratic pawnshop called Inactive Status.

Like all states, NC requires teachers to complete professional development credits for certificate renewal.  However, here it takes an Act of Congress for these credits to count toward your teaching license if you take college courses.  PD monies are given directly to each principal so on site classes are scheduled and in most cases teacher are required to attend.  The long and short of it – I cannot turn in my pawn slip for my PA certificate yet because although I have taken billions of credits here, they were not the right kind of credits.  BTW -is it a slip or ticket, all I know about pawn shops I learned watching Law and Order.  Hmmm, sounds like a good title for a book.  Anyway, I have to successfully complete 180 hours of PD credits to even be allowed back in the pawn shop, i.e. apply for my certificate to be changed to active status. Only then will a district in PA consider my application.

I know you are thinking,  ”Why didn’t she just go to grad school like all the teachers in PA?”  Well, the answer is simple, but that is another blog for another day.

I also had to face the fact that if I was applying for other jobs, I would have to tell my references.  I postponed this step for a long time fearing the worst.  After all, I enjoy seeing and working with and for these folks everyday.  It could get uncomfortable and I do not need any extra stress in my life .  Thankfully, the two most important people the Mayor of Munchkin land and the Wiz were very understanding.  One even said, “It will be close to impossible to replace you, but do what you need to do, and let me know how I can help.”  Amazing.

BTW – the spell check knew that Munchkin and land should be separated but I had to get a money order for the background check.

Also just like Dorothy, when I pulled an apple off a tree, I was startled to find out that I would get more than I bargained for.  One hundred and eighty hours of professional development is apparently equivalent to 6 graduate courses.  It seemed easy enough to remedy that, just take 2 classes.  I spent a few weeks searching for a grad school and more importantly, $$$$$ to pay for classes.  Also, with a husband that travels for work, no relatives close by and sketchy babysitting resources, physically going to classes is out of the question. Plus, I’m lucky to leave school with enough energy to drive home and get everyone fed, watered and ready for the next day.  Online was the only way to go but I still do not have that much extra $$$$$$$$$ (way more than I expected to need) sitting around.

I haven’t been able to settle on a school or program yet because it brought up a new set of issues with one of my other NC teaching certifications.  Apparently, I have to be offered a job in this field before I can apply for a PA certificate in it – ummmmm, maybe it is just me but it seems very unlikely that I would seem qualified to get an offer for such a job without a the credentials to teach it.  Seriously, is it just me?

Thankfully, after getting the runaround from many of the folks who are paid to help guide me, I stumbled upon my own personal Glinda.  HE probably rather go by Glenn the Good Witch of Pittsburgh so we’ll go with that.  When others referred me back to the office that pelted me with apples when I went to pick one, Glenn kindly explained the intricate nature of how and why the specialized certificate was different and what to watch for as I tried to navigate through the rest of my journey.

More good news – since I went to college in PA and have a certificate there although it is inactive, I can take advantage of the online PD classes that they offer for free.  Yes, that is right, FREE.  There are not enough courses for me to complete the entire 180 hours but it is certainly a good start.  You work at your own pace whatever time of day or night you can fit into your schedule.  I have to admit, it is really great planning on the part of the state but I imagine that is the difference between places with too many qualified teachers and not enough.  Way to go PA!

The Yellow Brick roller coaster, has been my life the past few weeks.  One minute I think that the ride is exciting and the next being sure our plan to move back was flying off the rails.  I hope we get to the Field of Poppies soon, I need some rest.

Sunday in Ikebukuro [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:24 am]
dr4b
My gratuitous thing I ended up doing today was eating Mexican food.

I went to Ikebukuro in the late afternoon and went to El Torito and had an enchilada-taco combo dinner. Yummmmm! I know it's not all that particularly good in the grand scheme of mexican food, but when you live in a country that doesn't really HAVE mexican food, you deal with what you have.

Looked around Sunshine City a bit after that, and then went to St. Tropez, where I played Pop'n'Music and Block People. By myself. So, as it turns out, I can now do the entirety of Easy Mode on Block People by myself. Normal mode took me about 5 continues to do the entire thing, but I could do all of IT by myself too. How scary is THAT? It's been a few weeks since I played... funny part is that by the end of finishing Normal mode, I was sweating! It was a pretty good workout to keep lifting the lego blocks and rearrange them and all, lots of ground to cover.

Stopped by Mint and looked at baseball cards and didn't spend any money. I could have actually gotten the Rookie Premium Edition box set for 1050 yen (it's normally much more expensive but this is without the insert cards), and they had the Fighting Spirit 2009 box set too, but that's like 3500 yen, even though it is a NICE Fighters set and I looked through it as well. Sigh. Soooo tempting, but.. no.

By the way, there's going to be an ACTUAL Ikebukuro Book-Off opening on the 20th! It's where the HMV used to be, across from Club Sega on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the movie theater building. Crazy! I walked in by accident and the guy's like "We're not open yet, we're just taking people's stuff to buy for stock. Come back on the 20th, here are some coupons!"

I went to Bic Camera to see what their photo printing machines are like. I still don't know where to print photos in Akabane, but... anyway, Bic has a decent bunch of machines, so that was good to find out. ALSO I played with some SLR cameras as usual and found a Tamron lens I actually really liked, a AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC lens that actually felt comfortable for once -- usually my problem with non-Nikon lenses is that they feel weird, but this one felt really good in my hands and it seemed fairly reasonable in terms of being wide-and-zoom. And now that Nikon made a new 18-200 VR which just costs more than the original, so I am even less likely to afford it, an alternative would be nice. (I still don't have anything working that's wider than 50mm.)

Whee.

Wow, up late again. Sunday nights are always tough.

Anyone know what's going on with all the helicopters and police cars zooming around downtown? I'm in Oxford Center and a police helicopter flew by my window a few minutes back, it zoomed in between Oxford and the Grant Building, which was pretty crazy.

I know the Russell Crowe movie is filming on the Allegheny River bridges today, is this madness for that? Or is it other madness entirely?
