| General Update |
[May. 15th, 2009|10:03 am] |
1. Still dealing with some leg issues after marathon. 2. Working on junkyard engine (finally got the jugs on). Note: put the inner retaining clip on first, then put the piston in the jug, then put the jug on the rod. 3. Garden is planted. Need to thin spinach, radish and whatever the hell else I planted from seed. 4. Garden structure is upgraded. Need more fill, need to add two more side walls and it will be done. Feels good. 5. The band is back together after our (normal?) 6 month hiatus and we sound good.
Getting lots of traction on lots of projects and it feels really good. |

| Weekend |
[Jul. 28th, 2008|10:12 am] |
Thursday: Aphrodesia in town. Stogies on the porch, sleeping bags in the backyard, hippies sleeping in almost every room. Good times.
( weekend summary: work, running, QT with the GF, gardens and margs )
Oh, and I'm diversifying financially by easing off some other investments and making ~double payments on the mortgage. No, I'm not doing this for the feel good aspect of "the american dream is to own your home" but instead as a plan to reduce long term expenses (i.e. remove a negative revenue stream) and maximize what I expect will be highly inflated dollars in the future. In the long run I expect to save ~$50k (mixed year dollars) inclusive of lost tax benefits (related to interest paid on mortgage) when the home is paid off. |

| Ah...Long Weekends |
[May. 26th, 2008|02:27 pm] |
I've spent the weekend generally relaxing, sleeping, being slightly social and spending lots of quality time with my lovely girlfriend.
What's weird, however, is the fact that I can't seem to get enough sleep: ( Read more... )
In any event, the tomatoes, green peppers, and squash are in ground. Toe is still broken and of course I stubbed it (painfully) getting out of the shower yesterday afternoon...just when I was hoping to start up the exercise routine again. Oh well. It'll get better eventually.
Happy Memorial Day. |

| Cooking: Tomato Juicing vs. Skin-removal+De-seeding |
[Aug. 22nd, 2007|12:40 pm] |
So last night I made some tomato juice for the first time using a juicer that purplemedusa gave me a couple of years ago (thanks!). While that juice has been thoughtfully put away for Bloody Mary Making Goodness (BMMG), I got to wondering:
1) A juicer basically removes the skins and seeds from the tomatoes (although mostly the seeds).
2) Many recipes (chili, sauce, etc.) call for tomatoes to be de-seeded and have their skins removed.
So, can I just use the juicer to de-seed and remove the skin from tomatoes? Or is there something else I'm missing... |

| Humbled |
[Jul. 27th, 2007|12:56 pm] |
My grandmother has 47 tomato plants.
Yes, that's right, FORTY SEVEN.
Wow.
And she has acorn squash that's bigger than a cantaloupe.
Other garden tidbits from Grandma and Uncle Ted:
- Fill an empty 25lb Onion Bag with horse manure and put it in your rain barrel at the beginning of the season: instant fertilizer!
- Plant garlic from the seed, if you use your own seed for a second year in a row you won't get a good crop.
- Soapy water sprayed on your plants may keep the deer away. |

Enter "time in Delhi" or "time in Sydney" and google will come back with:
New Delhi, India — Current local time: 6:35 PM on Friday, June 23 According to http://www.google.com
as a result.
Neat.
Life's been super busy, hence the no-posting. Lots of good chats with morleyroarly, glaucon, time hanging out with Maggie, fuzzycoffeebean, denovich...getting to see bootygrrl and her lovely TT at meatnog's Tiki Party. Nice chill time with Kip, Renee, and Moon...hanging out on the front porch, then moving to the backyard to watch the sunset and open a bottle of Fetzer Gewurtzheimer (tasty!), etc.
Work continues on Lily. Work continues on the Garden. Both are progressing well.
Oh, and I'm now the RA (religious advisor) of the Pittsburgh H3.
etc. Back to work and the craziness that it is.
Oh, and my dishes are clean too, which gives me a nice sense of balance. |

| Garden is In |
[Jun. 14th, 2006|11:48 pm] |
4 Big Boy Tomato plants went in on Sunday (along with 500lbs of topsoil...Thanks Mom&Dad!) - 6/11/2006 2 Squash plants went in today (6/14/2006) - not nearly enough topsoil, but I hope to add some over the weekend.
I'm trying to figure out what else I can plant this late in the season. I'm definitely going to plant some herbs and I might go for some hot peppers, green peppers, and spinach, but I'm not sure how the peppers will do this late. Also have to figure out what sort of soil the spinach likes (slightly sandy, IIRC?).
In other news I was super impressed by the thowmp and je2i garden, especially the upside down tomato plants. Crazy stuff.
Mad props go to Dad for coming out this weekend and helping work on building the garden as well as bringing lumber with him. This thing wouldn't have gotten built without him - and certainly not as well . I would have created a LOT more work for myself than necessary.
As I was getting the squash in and futzying with my drainage system, the sunset was amazing. I'm really looking forward to sitting in the backyard with morleyroarly and just watching the sky... |
