Health Goals [Oct. 29th, 2009|11:27 am]
[Tags|, ]

[info]giantlaser just posted about achieving long-ish term health goals, and since I have a tack I take in this area, I thought I'd put it down.Read more... )

Anyway, I know that's all pretty boring, but I just wanted to get it down (for myself) that at least in this point in my life I'm making a concerted effort to address potential health issues. Curious to see how it will all turn out.

marathon lingering pain [May. 20th, 2009|10:39 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I've had some lingering pain in the top of my right foot since the marathon. Read more... )

Results: x-rays show no fractures, stress or otherwise. Doctor said it's probably just an inflamed tendon and that I should just train normally, ice after exercise, and do a little massage before and after use. Good stuff: I'm jonesing to get either on the bike or start running again.

As an aside, I suspect that the pain is from my foot swelling and my shoe laces being too tight. Lessons learned.

Quote from the visit: "Did you have any pain during the marathon?" "Well, I did after mile 24, but this is my first marathon and I have no idea what's supposed to be normal."

Mental note: don't curl toes! [Apr. 15th, 2008|01:37 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |caffienated]

I curl my toes fairly frequently. It's a habit I picked up from winter camping and, well, flexing my feet is kinda like cracking knuckles for other people: it feels good and I feel stuff almost "crack". (I blame being a runner)

However, I broke my big toe on trail a week and a half ago, and, well, it still hurts. So, mental note: Don't curl toes on left foot!1

1(I've been pretty good about this, but I occasionally forget, like just now)

[mood | tired]

On Wednesday I'll have worked in Pittsburgh for two years.
On Saturday I'll have been engaged to the lovely [info]morleyroarly for one year.

And today, I did something I've been meaning to do since I bought my house: I ran home from work. The shop wanted to keep the car overnight (if I wanted to the work done), I had brought my running shoes, the weather was beautiful...

So I ran home from work. And given that I haven't run a contiguous 6 miles in, say, 6-10 months, it felt remarkably good: 9 miles in 80 minutes. Hopefully this means I'm getting back on the running/biking to work bandwagon. Well, after we get our last snow and spring returns, at least.

Otherwise, stuff is good. Garden is coming along, engine is out of the bus (*sigh* - alternator pulley failed and thrashed the alternator), and M and I have been having a blast (esp. now that she's not taking the EIT next week).

Whee!

Been meaning to update for a while, but have just been slammed with life (I know, what's new?).

Snippets:
  • been reading Garrison Kiellor's column on Salon for a while now and this one really resonated with me
  • reverse on the Acura is toast, looking in to having it fixed next week
  • currently reading "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" in my spare time
  • finished my (hopefully last) draft of the report I've been working on since April
  • visited some family friends of [info]morleyroarly in Maryland - had a great time at their 18th century (?) farm house and wandering around Frederick, MD
  • had some really good hang out time with [info]fu_urns Tuesday->Thursday. Thanks for the visit, 'fro!
  • generally tired but happy
  • starting to get my running on again and am doing at 8-16 a week (for the last 3-4 weeks)

Cold *SNAP* [Feb. 5th, 2007|10:32 am]
[Tags|, ]

-3 F with wind chill bringing it down to -19F when we woke up.

It's up to 1 F now (-17 w/ wind chill) and school is cancelled or delayed in lots of places. Radio says frostbite is possible with 30 minutes of exposure.

In all honesty though, it's cold, but it doesn't feel much colder than 5-15F - it just takes longer for your car to heat up and you'll just feel your feet start to numb a little quicker.

Lots of other stuff to report, but too busy. Finished a big paper, currently integrating comments from reviewers. Went to visit some of Morley's family friends in Maryland on their farm, went on the Frederick Gallery Walk to see their daughter Kesra's killer paitings, and generally had a nice time chatting, meeting folks, and exploring. Caught up with my boss on his farm nearby as well, which was nice, if brief.

That's about it. Running 2-3x a week to tai chi and back (hitting about 10-15 miles/wk), busy with house stuff, enjoying life, etc.

OH, and Friday night we finally made it out to Ibiza in Southside for Tappas and Sangria. The white sangria was nice (and better than I expected). After dinner we dropped by Z-lounge: their martinis are HUGE. Yum.

[music |Triple J - Groove Train]

It's been far too long, and I still don't have time for a real post, so here are some bullet items:Read more... )

That's the dump. Things have been "BUSY" at work, home, and otherwise. Headed to Maine in a week to see M's folks and get some quality family hangin' time in there, then back here for NYE's. M's headed back to SF for the weekend for a memorial, and I'm looking at wedding venues (whee!) and hopefully finishing the garden.

I'll leave y'all with some vaguely interesting "One Hour Mixtapes" from TripleJ:
Fela Kuti: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1460252.htm - a must if you like funk

There are others (including Midnight Oil, NOFX, Ben Folds, Ben Harper, Danger Mouse, etc.) here: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/artist.htm

Parties and Progress [Aug. 8th, 2005|12:28 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood |accomplished]

Had a great weekend:

Friday: went out to dinner with a friend to Dish in the Southside, then hit a couple of bars in Carrick - starting to explore the local, within walking distance, flavor

Saturday: Finally got my PA drivers license then spent way too much money on (mostly) essentials for the house and for dinner. Cooked dinner for [info]fuzzycoffeebean and just had a nice time chatting before she headed off to the airport to pick up her lovely hubby who was returning from Japan. Had a nice chat with [info]garletoe, then went to over to [info]chrismaverick and [info]beststephi's house for Jammy Jam.

Jammy Jam was awesome. It was the right mix of low key drinking, seeing old friends (a few of whom it was a surprise to see in town, namely Faisal and [info]raia) and meeting some new folks. [info]anukul, [info]fuzzycoffeebean, and I broke the porch swing with our fat asses and much general covorting was had. Really, it couldn't have been any better and it was *just* what I needed on so many levels. I also got STAGGERINGLY drunk in an attempt to help [info]chrismaverick kill the keg. That was pretty fun too.

Sunday: When I finally arose from the dead, I managed to motivate and finish up some of the structural reenforcing work on the Upper garage, basically putting in some angle brackets and a couple of other brackets to keep the 4x4s in place, got the 2nd door on the lower garage opened (the neighbor informs me that it hadn't been opened in 25 years. Woo!), and started in on organizing my crap in the lower garage. Oh, and because I'm a hippy, I hung my laundry out on the line today too. I finished off the evening with a 5 or 6 mile run, some stretches, and some minor cleaning. The run felt good, and I'm totally exhausted. Time for bed. Getting up at the crack of dawn to drive 240 miles for an 11 am meeting in Columbia, and I think I'm coming home tomorrow night.

Stuff is just too freakin' busy.
