iPhone apps and health update [Oct. 21st, 2009|03:35 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

so...i bought an iPhone 3GS. So far I'm loving it, but of course I'm wondering: what are people's favorite apps?

So far from what I've seen there are lots of things I could download that would result in me keeping my proverbial nose in my iPhone all the time (what i'm actively looking not to do) but there are a few potentially useful apps i've found so far (Trapster, MultiConvert, NPR Station Finder, air phones, remote, 5,800+ drink recipes) that i'm jazzed about at least having, should i want/need them.

In other news my knee is feeling a bit better. Still getting twinges around the 3.6-4 mile mark of my runs, but nothing constant or sharp and shooting. And that's over 19.5 miles in the last three days (after taking a second week off).

marathon lingering pain [May. 20th, 2009|10:39 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I've had some lingering pain in the top of my right foot since the marathon. Read more... )

Results: x-rays show no fractures, stress or otherwise. Doctor said it's probably just an inflamed tendon and that I should just train normally, ice after exercise, and do a little massage before and after use. Good stuff: I'm jonesing to get either on the bike or start running again.

As an aside, I suspect that the pain is from my foot swelling and my shoe laces being too tight. Lessons learned.

Quote from the visit: "Did you have any pain during the marathon?" "Well, I did after mile 24, but this is my first marathon and I have no idea what's supposed to be normal."

dear lazyweb: bike headlight? [Jun. 18th, 2008|05:46 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Dear Lazyweb,

I'm looking for a good bike headlight. Preferably I'd like something that has enough candlepower that I can ride in the dark and actually see the road when going relatively modest (or fast) speeds. When I search the bike-gear websites, everything in this category seems to cost in excess of $100.

I'd like to spend less. It doesn't have to be fancy, just ... illuminating.

Little help?

Cheers,
Avo

Mental note: don't curl toes! [Apr. 15th, 2008|01:37 pm]

[music |caffienated]

I curl my toes fairly frequently. It's a habit I picked up from winter camping and, well, flexing my feet is kinda like cracking knuckles for other people: it feels good and I feel stuff almost "crack". (I blame being a runner)

However, I broke my big toe on trail a week and a half ago, and, well, it still hurts. So, mental note: Don't curl toes on left foot!1

1(I've been pretty good about this, but I occasionally forget, like just now)

PSA: Falling off the face of the earth... [Mar. 19th, 2008|09:29 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Location |Freak Base Pittsburgh]

Hey y'all.

I'm going to be dropping off the face of the earth for a bit as a perfect storm of work, life, projects, training for a marathon, and learning about 2 sets of music on bass guitar (plus backing vocals, which will actually probably be the tough part) just hit.

If you need to contact me, hit me up via cell, and if its urgent, please say so. Note: if you're randomly in PGH from out of town, that is actually still considered "urgent".

And if I don't respond to your email/LJ/phone-call, it isn't because I don't want to talk to you, it's merely because the next couple months are going to be a bear.

Best,
Avo

Milestones [Apr. 2nd, 2007|10:29 pm]

[mood | tired]

On Wednesday I'll have worked in Pittsburgh for two years.
On Saturday I'll have been engaged to the lovely [info]morleyroarly for one year.

And today, I did something I've been meaning to do since I bought my house: I ran home from work. The shop wanted to keep the car overnight (if I wanted to the work done), I had brought my running shoes, the weather was beautiful...

So I ran home from work. And given that I haven't run a contiguous 6 miles in, say, 6-10 months, it felt remarkably good: 9 miles in 80 minutes. Hopefully this means I'm getting back on the running/biking to work bandwagon. Well, after we get our last snow and spring returns, at least.

Otherwise, stuff is good. Garden is coming along, engine is out of the bus (*sigh* - alternator pulley failed and thrashed the alternator), and M and I have been having a blast (esp. now that she's not taking the EIT next week).

Whee!

[Motivate, you Slacker!] Spring Training Log, Week 1 [May. 24th, 2006|01:40 am]

[mood | tired]

Well, I've been slacking on exercise given all my recent travels and other activities. No more. I've been running about once a week since India, but I'm determined to get back on the horse.

Saturday: Ran with the Las Vegas Hash House Harriers. Ran ~2 miles, walked ~2 miles. (felt out of shape)
Monday: Slow 4 miles down Brownsville Road
Tuesday: Faster ~4.5 miles including some hills followed by about 30 minutes of Tai Chi.

Feeling minorly sore after today's run, but I hit it a bit hard and hit the wall around mile 3.5. I blame a fast pace and the hills.

I'm also trying to cut down how much I eat. We'll see how that works.

[Motivate, you Slacker!] Fall Training Log, Week 22 [Mar. 3rd, 2006|01:40 am]

Ran a slow 6-7 miles tonight after Tai Chi class. Took my hilly route, as it's been a while and I felt like it was a good time to hit it. Good stuff. Went slow, felt good, etc.

[Motivate, you Slacker!] Fall Training Log, Week 17 [Jan. 26th, 2006|09:50 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |Fatboy Slim - Demons (is playing in my head)]

Ran ~3 miles to Tai Chi (downhill) in about 25 minutes. Not bad considering all the ice and snow on the sidewalks. About 2/3 of the way there I was bombing down a hill in a park that I've added to my route when I pulled a header. You know, full tilt boogie, hitting your stride on 2-3" inches of light powder with only ambient light from the city and fairly reasonable night vision when your foot hits either a railroad tie or a concrete block that's probably meant to stop erosion and all of the sudden you're airborne. Yup. Fun fun. At least I was wearing gloves and sweat pants so no real abraision.

Did 30 minutes of Tai Chi then decided to take a nice slow run home. I haven't done any LSD in probably a month, so I just set myself at a slow pace and started wandering through neighborhoods in the general direction of my house, running up and down the stairs that connect different neighborhoods, around random loops, up and down hills, and just nosing around, checking things out. Totally wish I had my camera, but alas, no such luck. Probably wouldn't have gotten as good a workout anyway.

At about the 45 minute mark (although it seemed like it was later than that) I decided that it was probably a good idea to try to find my way back home, especially given that I had no clue where I was or how far I had gone. Zen'd my way back to Brownsville Road and finally arrived at home after 64 minutes of running and more hills than I can count (ditto for the stairs).

I figure that was about 5-6 miles, putting me at 8-9 miles for today and ~15 miles of straight running + a 5-6 mile fartlek workout (i.e. the hash) for this week.

Rock.

Time for dinner.

Low-Key Weekend [Jan. 23rd, 2006|12:35 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | tired]

Didn't do much on Friday and Saturday over than catch up on sleep, cleaning, dishes, laundry, bills, etc. Did some running and Tai Chi too.

Sunday was fun: I went to the hash and did 5.5 miles of running and walking. Got to do some offroading in Lily ('67 bus in my icon) - just a mile or so of mud and gravel and bounciness to pick up some wayward hashers. I think we packed about 8 people in the back before saying "Hold on, this might get bumpy!" Woot! Lots of fun. For some reason I really wasn't feeling the run though, which I think is a combination of sleeping poorly Saturday night, being out of shape1, and LOTS of hills.

Afterwards I headed over to [info]fuzzycoffeebean and [info]denovich's house to watch the Stillers win the AFC Championship. Good food, fun company, fun throwing the ball around during half-time, etc.

On my ride home, EVERYONE was honking, people were out in the streets in front of their houses screaming and waving their terrible towels, one woman was in a cheerleading outfit, etc. It was crazy...and infectcious. The whole town is "on" and bonded over football. Very odd (but again, infectuous).

Came home and instead of fixing my CRX radiator, ended up napping for a few hours then getting sucked into the phone/computer for another hour or two. I guess it'll have to get done tomorrow.

1 I feel out of shape after the holidays - not much running and lots of eating drinking - but I have high standards.

random update [Sep. 13th, 2005|08:09 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | calm]

Went hashing yesterday with [info]denovich, which was fun. Not a stupendous workout as I ended up walking more than I like, but I probably ran/walked 4-5 miles.

Played soccer today at lunch.

Biked to Tai Chi after work and took my first real class. It was fun. Biking to Southside, however, is interesting. It's only 4 miles, but about 2 miles of that is a LONG HILL. So getting there is easy, getting back is a little more difficult. Luckily the grade isn't too bad, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I'm not sure I'll continue to do that when it's dark out though: there's not a whole helluva lot of visibility for cars to see a biker, even with copious flashing devices. We'll see.
