On Saturday I returned from ~9 days in Ireland visiting an old college/hashing buddy, Mr. Mark "H C" Frey, and yesterday I ran my first marathon in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 20 seconds.

Details on Ireland to follow in the next few days.

Regarding the Marathon, more info on the marathon )

Afterwards I had nothing left and Kim helped me walk around and keep moving (she had finished the half marathon a couple of hours previous). Then we sat and waited for folks, seeing how they had done, and eventually ended up in the strip, getting Primanti's and hanging out on balcony in the sunshine having a beer or two with friends and out-of-town visiting hashers.

Today I'm sore and having some trouble walking down stairs, calves and quads are stiff and hurting, but I'm still moving and doing ok.

EDIT: If you go here and fast forward to when the clock reads 4:04:24 (about 5:39 into the clip) you can see me coming up and crossing the finish line at 4:04:30 (clock time).

Just returned from Christmas in Maine, which was surprisingly warm.

Had a great time hanging out with [info]morleyroarly and her family, including meeting her Uncle Bill. It was great to get away, sleep in for a few days, and just spend some low key time bonding with M and her family.

We all made out like bandits, too! M's mom won, I think, with a gift certificate to a spa and a video iPod, but no one was far behind.

Got home late after a delayed flight and am still winding down. Matt B - a good friend of M's - is visiting, and I'm looking forward to getting to spend some quality time with him over the next couple of days before the big New Year's blow-out.

lots to say, as usual, but not sure where to start or what I want to share, so this will have to do for now.

Wonderful dinner with [info]thwomp and [info]je2i last night at their abode. Good times, good food, fun conversation.

Got some bus stuff done afterwards, including some loverly conversations with 'ber&Andy&[info]morleyroarly (who were all hangin' in Portland, OR) about everything from football to beautiful older women, World Cup Soccer to the effective installation of rain barrels and how Mr. Rumsfeld can be put to work in that area.

How sweet it is... [May. 30th, 2006|12:36 am]

[mood | tired]

Had an amazing weekend in the Bay Area hanging out with my lovely partner, [info]morleyroarly.

Up until now, there were still some tendrils of doubt in my mind, stuff that couldn't be rooted out no matter how I looked or tried, but stuff that just had to be lived through. Now those doubts are melting away: This is for real. The same magic that was there in India is here now Morley is back in the states, the same bond, the same spark...all perhaps a little more amplified.

cut for cuteness, etc. )

But seeing Morley was just a great bonus to the reason I was really out in the Bay Area for the weekend: [info]toddbert's wedding! Read more... )

Ok, it's time for me to hit the sack, but I really wanted touch on the following other highlights of the weekend:
  • seeing [info]eriktheplaid for the first time in forever: it's been WAY too long...thanks for bugging me!
  • bonding with [info]headlouse at zeitgeist followed by dinner and other partying. I'm so glad we had a chance to hang out and get to know each other more. I was super-impressed (not that I really expected anything less) and I look forward to further adventures.
  • meeting the sultry [info]tankgirlh, Jonathon, Matt, M* (who's moving to Pittsburgh next month) and more

And last but not least, a super shout out to [info]hindustan and [info]rachaelbclarke for their wonderful hospitality. you guys ROCK! It was also tremendous to get some RoBeast time in: such a cutie!

Whee!

Notes from Nepal [Apr. 6th, 2006|01:09 pm]

[Current Location |Darjeeling, India]
[mood |in awe]
[music |hum of computers in a cyber cafe]

Notes from Kakarvitta, just over the Indian Border in Nepal:

1) I am in love
2) I've never had better sex in my life
3) (1) and (2) are not related, but I'm certainly not complaining
4) Nepal (and some parts of India) feel remarkably "Playa-like"
5) Staying out after 9 pm may be dodgy in a small border town probably controlled by Maoists opposing the current Nepalese Gov't

Quote of the day from Kakarvitta: "India is a bit tame..."

Currently in Darjeeling, India. Headed out for 4-5 days of trekking
tomorrow. Should be an easy route with lots of villages along the way.

Darjeeling is beautiful and amazing. Worth the 6 hour/80 km jeep ride up from Siligura (sp?) through tiny villages and 1 lane, 2-way roads, criss-crossed by narrow gauge railroad track. The roadside is also dotted with signs attempting to be witty about not speeding: "No Road, No Rally", "Donate Blood at the bank, not on the road", etc.

The best though, was after 3 hours of hairpin turns and roads looping up back and forth up the mountain, we saw a sign that said: "Curve Ahead" Fucking Brilliant.

Whee!

notes from the sub-continent [Apr. 2nd, 2006|10:43 am]

[Current Location |Varansi, India]
[mood |loving life]
[music |Indian Pop]

Yesterday [info]morleyroarly and I decided to sit on the steps of a Ghat in Varanasi and watch two goats butt heads in a display of alpha dominance. It was our first day here and my first day in the "Real India" (i.e. outside Delhi).

As we watched and laughed at the goats do their thing, I felt a water sprinkling on me. Based on the direction the water was coming from and the spray pattern on the ground in front of me, it became immediately apparent (in about 1.56 seconds) that we were being pissed on by someone behind us.

I say "we" and I mean "me", and when I say "someone" I mean something, as an old, aged goat had decided to piss on me from the ledge behind us.

GODDAMN!

So: Welcome to India! You are now some goat's bitch. Enjoy!

p.s. I can report that Goat Urine may in fact be a new scent appearing in American markets soon, I think it shows a lot of promise.

Posted some photos of NYE, a hike in the Oakland (CA) Hills, and a snowy day in Pittsburgh to my flickr account last night.

- Hanging out with my friend Terri from Baltimore
- New Year's Day Hash at Ian's
- MUTTER!
- Seeing Sissy's band rock the house
- Joel Wrangling
- Late night calls from cute girls at opportune times ([info]garletoe)

[mood |revived]

It's been a busy few days.

Last week I was pretty sick Mon-Wed and ended up working from home and sleeping a lot.

Thursday I did an Orphan's Thanksgiving with some hashing friends: very low-key and very nice. The food was great, especially the killer green-bean, pomegranite seed, and goat cheese side. I am also completely in envy of Swamp and Psycho's wine cellar. Oof!

After dinner Thursday night I picked up [info]garletoe at the airport. more details on the visit )

Last night I dropped [info]garletoe off at the airport then rocketed downtown to meet up with my old hashing buddy Steamer. I haven't seen Steamer in over two years and it's been way too long, especially now that we only live 4 hours from each other. We grabbed a few beers then trekked off to spend an evening with Phil Lesh and Friends, Searching for the Sound. Perhaps I'll write more on that later, but by the second set I was on my feet and dancing and loving it. Good 'ol Phil.
