| PSA: Falling off the face of the earth... |
[Mar. 19th, 2008|09:29 pm] |
Hey y'all.
I'm going to be dropping off the face of the earth for a bit as a perfect storm of work, life, projects, training for a marathon, and learning about 2 sets of music on bass guitar (plus backing vocals, which will actually probably be the tough part) just hit.
If you need to contact me, hit me up via cell, and if its urgent, please say so. Note: if you're randomly in PGH from out of town, that is actually still considered "urgent".
And if I don't respond to your email/LJ/phone-call, it isn't because I don't want to talk to you, it's merely because the next couple months are going to be a bear.
Best, Avo |

I hate office lighting.
I got into the office early this morning and was able to enjoy just over a half hour of semi-ambient lit, darkened office before someone came in and turned on the overhead flourescents. Very jarring (and more than I expected). God I miss having my own office.
In other news, stuff in Pittsburgh is good. Spring is here, work is (relatively) good, and things are going well on the home front. Had a great time last weekend at Moon's 60th birthday followed by various shannanegins at home with Sara and her friend Craig (who is, believe it or not, Pittsburgh's Queen Jeffrey. Oh my word, the similarities are scary.) On Sunday Morley came to her first hash run and we climbed to the top of Mt. Washington...twice.
Anyway, lots of other stuff going on but no time to write. Enjoying life and Pittsburgh. Hope to be go to see Emo Philips this weekend (never seen him perform before - thanks to moorlock for posting about the SF shows), etc.
p.s. Hi georgejas! Hope you're enjoying Seattle! |

| long time, no post |
[Dec. 15th, 2006|08:36 am] |
It's been far too long, and I still don't have time for a real post, so here are some bullet items:( Read more... )
That's the dump. Things have been "BUSY" at work, home, and otherwise. Headed to Maine in a week to see M's folks and get some quality family hangin' time in there, then back here for NYE's. M's headed back to SF for the weekend for a memorial, and I'm looking at wedding venues (whee!) and hopefully finishing the garden.
I'll leave y'all with some vaguely interesting "One Hour Mixtapes" from TripleJ: Fela Kuti: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1460252.htm - a must if you like funk DJ Shadow: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1731034.htm Peaches: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1722980.htm - interesting Aussie Roadtrip Mix: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1793745.htm
There are others (including Midnight Oil, NOFX, Ben Folds, Ben Harper, Danger Mouse, etc.) here: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/artist.htm
Hope you're all well and gearing up for the holidays and having fun! -avocado out!
ps the weather in PGH has been unseasonably warm - 50s-60s. Whee! |

One of the bullet points you hear from the right regarding why the US should NOT ratify the Kyoto Protocol is invariably:
"The Kyoto Protocol does not effect developing countries such as China and India, and therefore penalizes the US unnecessarily"
Well, as could probably have been expected, this is bunk. It turns out that China has done more to reduce it's "Greenhouse Gas Intensity"1 than the US has by a long-shot. In addition, they're also making a real go of integrating renewable energy into their society.
Meanwhile, Americans still produce the most Greenhouse Gasses per capita...
What can you do?
Oh, the usual:
- Turn off lights and monitors when not in use
- Turn down your heat or air-conditioning when you're not at home
- Drive less and/or consolidate your trips
- Walk/bike when you can (see: drive less) - you might even get physically fit2,3
- Buy a TerraPass to offset your auto's emissions
- Sign up for green energy if you have that option through your electric company
- etc.
1 A dubious metric relating greenhouse gas emissions to GDP instead of overall emissions.
2 Mental note: start riding bike to Tai Chi again
3 I have a hard copy of this article. If anyone wants a copy, just let me know.

Last night I condensed the 30+ page report I was working on all summer into a 3-page "Pre-print" for a conference submission.
The latter is bound to have spelling errors, but may serve as a quick insight into the type of work I am doing. |

The main project I've been working on for the last few months at work is finally done. Preliminary feedback has been very good. It feels nice to work on something and have people recognize it as something that effort was put into, and it's a damn relief that it's done -- at least this draft of it.
More work to do, more projects in the hopper, but damn am I happy that this paper is no longer (directly) over my head. |

Completely slammed at work.
Meme responses soon-ish (end of weekend?).
Life good. Tired. Fighting off cold. Need about 10 hours of sleep.
Took my Zafu meditation cushion for a spin last night: it's brilliant. Blows me away how easy it makes things.
Time work work! |
